The sun is shining here in Old Lyme. It is so nice to see summer weather. This week I participated in the Statewide 2025 Hurricane Season Briefing. The Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security hosted the event. These presentations provide municipal employees with valuable information so that we can prepare for the hurricane season. I appreciate Selectwoman, Jude Read and Emergency Management Director, Dave Roberge for taking the time to attend. On Tuesday, I attended the Road and Public Safety Committee meeting. This group is actively researching options to reduce speeding in Old Lyme. They have received presentations from three different vendors on the installation of speed cameras with ticketing options. Any recommendations made by this committee will come before the Board of Selectmen for discussion and approval. I appreciate all the hard work and time these committee members have dedicated to this topic. Ledge Light Health District wants residents to be aware that they have decided to change how they share beach water test results for the 2025 season. Instead of sending emails they will post weekly updates on their website and social media channels. This will allow for more timely communication and broader access for everyone. They will also notify town leaders if there are any issues, and we will pass the information to you. You can find updates on their social media pages here: Tomorrow, Saturday June 14th, the Board of Selectmen, Economic Development Commission, and the Sound View Commission will be presenting the owners of The Carousel Shop with recognition for the 100th anniversary of their Allen Herschell carousel. The carousel was brought to Old Lyme from Florida in the 1970s. The Vowles family, who own the Carousel Shop, invite the public to join them for a celebration from 2PM-4PM. They will be raffling T-shirts and one of the carousel's brass rings. The Town presentations will take place at 3:15pm. Tuesday, June 17 th, marks the 250th anniversary of the Battle at Bunker Hill. Old Lyme's America 250 Committee is marking the occasion with an informative blog post that shares how the men of Lyme (which included Old Lyme at that time) went to battle under the leadership of our own Samuel Holden Parsons. Read about our historic residents' influence in the Revolutionary War on the Explore Old Lyme's America 250 page.
Reminders:- Please note that the Town Hall and Transfer Station will be closed on June 19th in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.
- Mother Nature’s generous precipitation has provided us with a grand growing season. If you see any road signs (speed, directional, street names) that are covered by trees or other vegetation, please contact us at selectmansoffice@oldlyme-ct.gov.
- Eversource will be removing certain power lines/poles from Town open space land, land trust property and private property. This may involve the use of helicopters. The plan is to begin on the Champlain North/South Open Space trail and then move to Boggy Hole Preserve, and Ames Family Open Space. Notification will be forthcoming when those spaces are closed. Eversource will post signage and keep the Open Space and Land Trust up to date on their progress.
Have a wonderful weekend on the shoreline! All my best, Martha
