The week began with a well-attended Town Meeting. All of the items on the call passed and those projects have begun moving forward. Construction on the Swan Brook Sluiceway will begin later this month. We are still waiting to hear when the paving of the handicap spots in the Sound View parking lot will commence.
On Tuesday, Director of Public Works Ed Adanti and I met with DEEP Representative, Kevin Zawoy at White Sands Beach. Last year we created a berm on the beach which resulted in less flooding during the winter storms. Kevin provided us with the Department’s General Permit for beach grading and beach raking. I will be sending this out to the beach associations so that they will have the appropriate information should they wish to do any work on their beaches over the fall and winter season.
Jill Karrenberg from Human Resources was joined by Corporal Dominic Solari and Patrolmen Steven Hackett and Ethan Kula from the Old Lyme Police Department at the Eastern Connecticut State University Fall Career Fair on Tuesday. They spoke with several students from the criminology department about policing as a career and connected with the Dean of Arts and Sciences about returning to campus to do presentations for individual classes.
A few weeks ago, we told you that a Trinity Solar Representative would be in Old Lyme working under a solicitor’s permit. I do want to inform you that the specifications of his permit have changed. Robert Wolfe will be in town on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturdays from 10 AM to sunset. His last day is December 14, 2025.
Old Lyme is a member of the Greater Saybrook Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber wanted us to be aware that the annual 2024 Scarecrow Fest has begun. Families, schools, businesses, and civic organizations are invited to participate. Last year the winners were from Westbrook – perhaps this year an Old Lyme participant will win. The top two scarecrows are honored for their creativity and craftsmanship, chosen by the public.
Please remember that the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation will be holding their 19th Annual Walk for a Cure this weekend. This will impact the following roads in Old Lyme:
Shore Road / Route 156, Bailey Road, Mile Creek Road, Flat Rock Hill Road, Brown’s Lane, Hatchett’s Hill Road, Four Mile River Road, and Colton Road. Please be aware of the many walkers on our streets and be extra cautious as these participants make their way through the town.
I'd like to give a shout out to the following employees Tracy Beatty (Finance Dept.), Courtney Joy and Jessica Glantz (Town Clerk's Office) for organizing our
Flannel Friday. These activities help foster a positive work space and I'm so grateful we have such amazing staff who go above and beyond to create these events.
Have a wonderful weekend.
