This weekend Town of Old Lyme residents celebrate the annual Midsummer Festival.
Here are some updates that may be helpful as you plan.

  • FRIDAY NIGHT: We start off with a wonderful concert featuring the band Locomotion on the lawn of the Florence Griswold Museum from 7-9pm. Bring your chairs or blanket, a picnic or enjoy food truck fare and relax along the banks of the Lieutenant River.
  • SATURDAY MORNING: Midsummer Run - LYSB's popular 5K Run & Walk which winds through the village streets, brings runners and their supporters out from across the region. The 5K Run & Walk steps off 8am, and the Kids K at 9am. Pre-register here or register on site beginning at 6:45am.
    • Road Closures – From 8-9am Saturday morning McCurdy Road & Lyme Street will be closed from the Lyme Street Firehouse to the Old Lyme Country Club. Old Lyme Country Club guests can still access the club driveway from McCurdy Rd. Soup kitchen guests can still access the First Congregational Church from Route 156 onto Ferry Road.
  • 19th Annual Lyme-Old Lyme Lions Classic Car Show will be held at the Roger Tory Peterson Estuary Center from 9:30am-1:30pm on Saturday. The Lions will serve their usual fare, including hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, and their famous popcorn. All proceeds go to Lions charities. Admission is $5.00 for spectators.
  • SATURDAY NIGHT: Fireworks will fill the sky this Saturday evening, July 27th! The Old Lyme Town Band will start playing at 7:30pm on the field between the Middle School and High School, and the fireworks will begin shortly after 9pm. A shuttle bus will run, starting at 7pm, from the Old Lyme Marketplace parking lot (by The Bowerbird) to the Middle School driveway, and back shortly after the conclusion of the fireworks. Their last run will be at 10:15pm from the school campus. (Rain date  - Sunday July 28th if necessary and would be announced by Saturday morning.)

Additionally, on Sunday afternoon from 4-6pm, there will be an Ice Cream Social featuring the Old Lyme Town Band. The event is free and on the Town Green at the intersection of Lyme Street and McCurdy Road. This event is sponsored by the Old Lyme Historical Society, the Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library, the Greater Old Saybrook Chamber of Commerce, The Florence Griswold Museum & LYSB.

The Ethics Commission is looking for one permanent member and 2 alternates. The Ethics Commission ensures that policies enacted by our Town are made fairly and without undue influence, so that the citizens’ confidence is justified. Applicants cannot have served within the past six months as a Town board member or as an officer of a party’s town committee. Registered Republicans or unaffiliated applicants are particularly needed. Please notify the commission directly if you are interested. The Town website (under Boards and Commissions) can be utilized to put you in touch with the commission. If you prefer, you can email the current chair at janecable135@outlook.com . The commission meets as needed and has an annual organizational meeting each December or January. It appoints its own members.

The Assessor would like to remind residents of the ongoing data collection for the 2024 Revaluation. As we are nearing the end of July, the Tax Office would like you to remember that Thursday, Aug. 1 is the final day to pay taxes to avoid interest charges. Payments must be received by Old Lyme Tax Collector Office or postmarked by that date. If you have already mailed in or dropped off your taxes, the office has been ringing them through. You can track the processing status of your payments on the Tax Collector website page, and click on the Check Payment Status button. Remember that it then takes up to a week for a paper check deposited in our tax system to clear your bank account.

The fastest way to get your tax payments processed is to use our ACH (electronic) check payment option. It costs only 50 cents, less than a postage stamp, and your funds will clear both our system and your bank within 48 hours on weekdays.

Lastly, I do want to make everyone aware that last evening and early this morning Old Lyme had another series of car break-ins. One car was stolen and numerous cars were ransacked. Resident State Trooper Matt Weber would like to remind everyone to lock your cars and make sure you do not leave valuables in your vehicles.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. The weather should be perfect as we enjoy this last weekend in July.

All my best,
Martha
